Auroras over Beltsville

On October 11, 2024, the Baltimore-DC metro area observed a unique light event, auroras, and HU Beltsville captured it! The Sun is entering solar maximum from its 11-year cycle and huge amount of charged particles are being thrown in what we call Coronal Mass Ejections (CME’s) by the Sun, where some of them are traveling towards Earth and hitting its magnetic field sending all these charged particles to the poles producing sub-magnetic storms and given us these wonderful light shows that can be observed all the way to the Southern states. Our All-Sky Imager captured briefly these auroras after sunset with a purple glow over Beltsville.
