Howard University was awarded Research One (R-1) Carnegie Research Activity Classification from the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. R-1 classification is only for institutions that invest in research spending and have high production of doctoral degree recipients. Howard is the only HBCU with R-1 designation, and less than 5% of degree-granting institutions in America have this designation. Sen Chiao (picture above), director of the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology (NCAS-M), is one of the leaders that took the university to this level and was awarded for this achievement. Howard University Beltsville Campus (HUBC) would like to congratulate our director on this enormous success. Lets keep on doing more research for the advancement of science here at Howard University, NCAS-M, and HUBC!
