Past Campaigns

Howard University Beltsville Campus has been part of several campaigns for the past few years. Here are a few of the latest campaigns where HUBC made a major contribution to the scientific community, including the involvement of students participating in hands-on research. One thing to consider, AEROSE is an ongoing campaign, and it is located under the Research tab.

The Student Airborne Science Activation (SASA) program selected highly motivated early-career undergraduates at eligible universities to participate in an 8-week summer research experience. Students gained hands-on research experience in all components of a scientific research campaign, including flying onboard the NASA P-3 research aircraft to collect land, ocean, and atmospheric measurements. These students also collected data at HUBC during the program.

The Ozone Water-Land Environmental Transition Study (OWLETS) was a project aimed at assessing air quality in and around the Chesapeake Bay area during the summers of 2017 and 2018. Both summers focused on creating vertical profiles of ozone and other trace gases during various air quality events to improve forecasting similar events in the future. HUBC was a huge participant in the 2018 campaign with ozonesonde balloon launches and other measurements.

The objective of the Deriving Information on Surface Conditions from Column and Vertically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality (DISCOVER-AQ) is to improve the interpretation of satellite observations to diagnose near-surface conditions relating to air quality. HUBC played a huge role in collecting surface and airborne data with several instruments including timing ozonesonde launches with satellite overpasses and airplane measurements.
