For the last six months, Howard University Beltsville Campus had the privilege to host Tsunghau “Howard” Peng as a student visitor from Taiwan. Howard is an undergrad studying Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University in Taiwan and he’s graduating this coming summer. He’s a busy student with several research projects like wind field retrieval using radar, using wind lidar and drones to monitor pollution, forecast ensemble analysis, and designing an app to navigate with severe weather. Some of the research work that he was involved here at HUBC was the retrieval of the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) from urban and suburban areas using the CL61 Ceilometer from Vaisala, compare observational data with the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh model from NOAA, and analyzed radiosonde and wind lidar data from HUBC for PBL retrieval under the supervision of HUBC’s Nakul Karle and NCAS-M director Sen Chiao. Howard’s plans will be to publish his research work done here in HUBC and apply for a Masters in Atmospheric Sciences at Howard University. One final take away from Howard was seeing snow for the first time. Can’t wait to see him back in the DC area and maybe with more snow storms for him to enjoy.
